I bought this device because I needed to find a lost survey pin in an overgrown field. Having now successfully used it, I don’t recommend this model for that purpose. The advertising and product literature included in the product packaging make it clear that the device is designed to aid people looking for lost coins and jewelry. I suspect it would do that job quite well on beach sand, mowed lawn, trail or other relatively clear area, but my assumption that a 1/2″ diameter, 8′ long, steel pin driven vertically into the ground would be easy to detect proved false. The instruction manual recommends sweeping the ground 1/2″ above the surface. That isn’t possible in a field overgrown with brambles. Holding the metal detector above the weeds produced no signal. The only solution was to run survey lines from established coordinates to narrow the search area enough to enable clearing the ground with a sickle before searching with the metal detector.
