Do songs “sound” like the year they were released in to you?
This is DEFinitely an oddball question, so hear me out…Not really *every* song I hear, but I Very often can hear an older song & it’ll just somehow *sound* like the year it came out in. I realize maybe 90% of that is because I lived it & can remember the time frame, etc.But I think there’s a little more to it.I was reminded of Marty Balin’s “Hearts” while listening to some Jefferson Starship tonight & I thought- that song sounds so distinctly “1981″. That make sense? Atlanta Rhythm Section’s “Alien” is another one. & so is The Pointer Sisters’”Slow Balin surfboard Socks Hand”. All those songs scream 1981 to me.Also Grand Funk’s “I’m Your Captain/Closer to Home”& Mungo Jerry’s “In the Summertime” (1970), do that for me too. (I’m sure these are all on Youtube to compare. I don’t wanna bore anyone w/ 10,000 links)Maybe it’s the mellow sounding keys. Maybe it’s the technology available & in popular use at the time, make for a distinct sound to my ears. Maybe it’s simply association from memory. (That & the fact that I’m one of those factoid geeks who needs to know release dates, etc)But does this happen to you too w/ songs *you* remember?For me, there’re definitely lots of songs that sound like the decade they were put out in, but my brother & I have this “game” where we can zero it in to the year (or mighty close to it) – just from hearing the sound quality of the recording, & production style of the song, the *way* it’s sung, etc…Law Man- Right after I did my last edit, I read yours & that’s exactly what I mean! & I guess this happens w/ all of us for different time frames we remember.martin – I can relate. Sometimes even if you weren’t old enough to’ve been aware of things like production, you can still just listen & make an educated guess. It’s a bizarre thing, isn’t it?
